Master Professional Practice in Higher Education - Máster en Práctica Profesional en Educación Superior
The Professional Certificate in Education (PcET) is for those looking to gain a nationally recognised qualification to teach in further education and the broader post-compulsory sector, such as Adult/Community Education.
This flexible part time programme allows students to work whilst studying. Anyone currently engaged in full or part-time teaching or training, or for those who intend to embark upon a teaching career in the post compulsory education sector, or as a trainer can apply.
During the course you will develop your skills, knowledge and understanding of successful and effective practice in the Post compulsory Education and Training sector. Strategies introduced during the programme are designed to develop your confidence as a professional practitioner. You will also have an excellent opportunity to share good practice, creative and innovative teaching and learning strategies and resource materials with others, from a wide range of subject areas as well as your own.
Applications are invited from non-graduates who will be required to confirm 70 hours (minimum) of teaching in the first year and second year to include 20 hours observation of an experienced tutor
Mathematics and English language GCSE Grade C or above, or equivalent, are desirable, but not essential
Mentor support is required
Enhanced DBS check required as appropriate
If English is not your first language you should be able to demonstrate a level of at least IELTS 6.5 or equivalent (minimum score of 5.5 in each band)
An interview is required for this course
The first year of the programme is designed to develop a range of essential teaching skills, increase knowledge of the learning process and develop ideas relating to teaching and learning strategies. Four modules will be completed during the first year:
Preparing to Teach (10 credits)
Foundations of Learning and Teaching (10 credits)
Planning and Assessment (20 credits)
Professional Development and Practice 1* (20 credits)
* This module will include the completion of 70 hours (minimum) of teaching to include 20 hours observation of an experienced tutor.
The second year of the programme will engage you in curriculum planning and research activities designed to enhance professional skills. Three modules will be completed during the second year:
Widening Professional Practice (20 credits)
Curriculum Development for Inclusive Learning (20 credits)
Professional Development and Practice 2** (20 credits)
**A further 70 hours (minimum) of teaching experience will be completed in the second year.
Learning and teaching methods
The course promotes a high level of student participation and engagement through discussion and a varied range of learner centered activities.
Attendance is normally one day a week – either one morning and afternoon (currently Tuesday, 10.00am-3.30pm) or one afternoon and one evening (currently Thursday, 2.00pm-7.30pm).
Evidence from past years shows that completion of the course enhances the career and employment potential of course members.
Students who have successfully completed the Professional Certificate of Education will be eligible to progress to higher level studies.
