This course is a postgraduate teaching course which will enable you to apply for Qualified Teacher of Learning and Skills via the Institute for Learning. The course will thoroughly prepare you for the practical demands of teaching in the FE & Skills sector within one academic year. The course will also provide you with 60 credits at masters level.
You will also complete an alternative placement in a different setting which you are expected to have fulfilled before the course starts. This information will be relayed to you on preinduction. If you are interested in focusing on English, Maths, or in teaching disabled learners, we also offer a PGCE Post-14 with Specialism course.
You will need an undergraduate degree (minimum 2:2) in a subject that is applicable to the Further Education and Skills sector, such as psychology, law, media, sports and music technology. You will also need GCSE grade C or above in English Language and Maths (or Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy).
You will complete five mandatory 20 credit modules:
Introductory award in Education and Training
Enhancing Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Theories and Principles of Educational Practice
Subject Specialist Professional Practice
Curriculum in Context
Plus one of the following optional modules:
Teaching HE in FE
Post 14 teaching in schools
Technology enhanced learning
The optional module is a blended learning module which requires only 20% attendance and 80% independent learning.
This course will ensure that you are prepared to teach in the FE & Skills sector. You will be qualified to teach in; FE Colleges; secondary schools (post-14 only); sixth form colleges; academies; training providers; offender learning/prison education or in the voluntary sector.
