The world’s environments have long been threatened by human impact. As pressures on the natural environment intensify, there is a growing need for professionals skilled in conservation and environmental management. They need a wide range of skills, including biodiversity, survey techniques, environmental management and monitoring systems, geographical information systems and an understanding of relevant ecological principles, legislation and regulatory frameworks, which demands a multidisciplinary approach.

This Masters programme in Wildlife and Conservation Management brings together the physical, chemical, biological, socioeconomic, administrative and legislative aspects of land planning, providing the skills you need for an exciting and rewarding career as an environmental conservation manager. It combines a broad understanding of the science and management of conservation, putting emphasis on integrating specialist knowledge and practical skills with IT and communication.


Licenciado/Título de Ingeniero/Título de Arquitecto with an average of 6.0-6.9, Aprobado or above

English language qualifications:
GCSE pass in English at Grade C or above
IELTS with an average overall score 6.5 with at least a 5.5 in each component
TOEFL IBT minimum score 88
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): exams taken from January 2015 – overall score of 176 with at least 162 in each component; exams taken before January 2015 – Grade C and no less than borderline in each skill
Trinity College English Language qualifications: ISE III Pass for postgraduate taught courses and research applications
City and Guild’s IESOL/ISESOL tests at expert and mastery levels (C2 and C1) for the majority of postgraduate programmes
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum of 67 points in each elemen

You also have the option to complete a scientific scuba diving course, either locally or at a tropical location (for an additional fee which is approximately £1000). Previous trips include Indonesia, Costa Rica, Honduras and Borneo. The exact location will vary each year and this is based on how suitable the tropical area is and the overall cost of the trip. The European Field Expedition fee to Portugal is approximately £500-£600. You will conduct a substantial research project in an area of your choice, often in co-operation with an environmental management organisation.

Learning and teaching methods
Full-time students spend 2 days at University, usually Wednesday and Thursday, and around 12 hours per week in lectures and practical sessions. Part-time students attend one day per week. First year part-time students attend on Wednesdays and second years attend on Thursdays. There are some residential fieldwork excursions, typically to Portugal and Mid Wales (for a small additional fee). Some fieldwork trips will extend beyond the two days of study, but you will be told in advance in order to plan appropriately.

Graduates from our MSc Wildlife and Conservation Management have progressed to careers in the Environment Agency, utility companies, local, national and international conservation organisations, environmental consultancies, and regional and national government. Several others have progressed on to PhD study and into academic careers.
