Urban design is the art of making places. It is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary process which shapes the physical setting for life in urban environments. It involves the design of buildings, groups of buildings, spaces and landscapes, and the establishment of frameworks and processes that facilitate successful development.

In the Master of Urban Design you will get an excellent grounding in urban design theory and complete three intensive design studios to develop expert urban design skills. Through the studios you will explore the importance of place, undertaking fieldwork with professional practice and the wider community to gain practical experience which you can immediately apply in your urban design career.

The Master of Urban Design helps develop professionals who are capable of seeing the city from multiple viewpoints and who relish working with interdisciplinary teams.

You need to meet the following criteria for successful entry to the program:

A three-year undergraduate degree in an Urban Design, Landscape Architecture or Architecture discipline with a weighted average of at least 65% in the final two years
A portfolio of recent design work, submitted in accordance with the requirements of the Selection Committee

The program is aimed at those who already hold a three-year undergraduate degree in a related discipline who can demonstrate prior design experience.

You will have the chance to take part in a MSD travelling studio.

Travelling studios are ´working laboratories´ for design thought and production where you explore complex, real-life issues and devise solutions, collaborating with students from across MSD and often from other national and international universities. Exposure to unfamiliar cultures, places and people will stimulate your ability to think creatively and problem-solve. Travelling studios are a great way to bond with fellow students and forge international relationships. And they give you fantastic experience for your CV.

MSD students have taken part in travelling studios across the world and engaged with life and work in many countries including in Mexico, China, Chile, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Spain and the USA.

Travelling studios for 2014 are going to New Delhi, Santiago, Hong Kong, Florence, Zurich/Munich, Seoul and Nanjing.
