This specialist qualification allows you to gain an understanding of the issues, theory, policy and practice relating to teaching children, with English as an additional language. It will enable you to build on your current practices and explore new approaches to learning and teaching in this area.
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher is a vital, specialist role. There are increasing numbers of bilingual children in UK Schools. How do these children feel trying to learn the curriculum in English with only a partial or sometimes a non-existent command of English? How can they understand the school culture or what their teacher and classmates say when they may have only very basic communication skills?
To help these children access the curriculum in English and integrate within the School, EAL teachers are crucial in providing a bridge between the curriculum and the bilingual pupil. Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL) is both a fascinating yet highly specialised teaching role.

English language qualifications:
GCSE pass in English at Grade C or above
IELTS with an average overall score 6.5 with at least a 5.5 in each component
TOEFL IBT minimum score 88
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): exams taken from January 2015 – overall score of 176 with at least 162 in each component; exams taken before January 2015 – Grade C and no less than borderline in each skill
Trinity College English Language qualifications: ISE III Pass for postgraduate taught courses and research applications
City and Guild’s IESOL/ISESOL tests at expert and mastery levels (C2 and C1) for the majority of postgraduate programmes
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum of 67 points in each elemen
Don’t worry if you do not meet these requirements, we run a number of courses to prepare you for academic studies.
In common with all of the MA Education pathways, you will study the core module Research Methodology. In addition you will study the two specialist modules.
TEAL: Current Issues
This module provides an opportunity for teachers of all keystages who have children with EAL in their care to engage in a more thoughtful and rigorous way with the issues currently facing them. Some of the issues you will consider are how to integrate content and language learning, supporting EAL children with SEN, bilingualism, and examining good practice for new arrivals.
TEAL: Theory, Policy and Practice
This module will equip you with a theoretical basis upon which you can build on your practice. It explores language acquisition and learning theory, motivation, the practicalities of designing EAL courses and materials, strategies for teaching and policy relating to EAL.
Following study of these specialist modules, participants can select one module from the following TESOL modules:

TESOL: Materials Design and Evaluation
Alternatively you can select a relevant module from one of the other MA Education pathways.
Students present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan.
Awards are available at Postgraduate Certificate level (after completion of two taught modules) and Postgraduate Diploma level (after completion of four taught modules). To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan.
Learning and teaching methods
You will study a number of specialist modules, also coursework and a dissertation will be required. Part-time students will study two years, part-time plus dissertation (typically one evening per week). Full-time students will study one year, full-time plus dissertation. Participants are allowed to take a maximum of five years to complete the programme.
Part-time students normally take two specialist modules in year one and a third one plus Research Methodology in year two. This is followed by the dissertation.
Full-time students take three specialist modules and Research Methodology over the course of one academic year and then go on to complete the dissertation.
A Masters degree is required for career advancement in many professions and is regarded as evidence of effective commitment to high level professional development. TEAL is an area of considerable development and allows practising primary and secondary teachers to specialise and become subject leaders. It is also useful for those who are looking for a change in career from other areas such as EFL and ESOL or from unrelated fields.
