This course deals with the practical development and application of the key operational aspects of retailing, and will help you to understand the contemporary retail environment and examine topical issues related to retail management. You’ll learn from research-active,industry-experienced staff who publish ground breaking research into retail management issues.
You will develop analytical skills related to retail operations and the international retail environment by considering international retail development and understanding the academic debate surrounding international retail activity, with a view to putting this knowledge into practice.
An honours degree is normally required 2.2 or above, or substantial relevant industrial experience at senior management level. Applicantsare encouraged to provide details of relevant work experience.
Business Strategy & Finance
You will develop an understanding of the foundations of strategic analysis,choice and the implementation strategies that usually tie into a norganisation’s business decisions (Private, Public and Third Sector). This includes a study of Corporate Finance in terms of an organisation’s sources of finance, reporting and the interpretation of financial data that is fundamental to the broader understanding of the dynamics of the tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors.
You will identify issues and appropriate measures relating to effective managerial performance in a complex operating environment. The unit seeks to develop competence in the areas of organisational management and behaviour appropriate to the development of a career in management within the leisure sector. The unit focuses on the ‘effective manager’ by investigating key roles and functions and how these may be affected by operational environment, organisational structure and culture,particularly within international and multinational organisations.
Retail Marketing & Consumer Behaviour
The aim of this unit is to develop an understanding of the current market environment for retailers in regard to the application of a marketing and consumer behaviour orientation towards real world retail company analysis.
Retail Business Development
An increasing proportion of graduates are starting to find employment in small firms and, eventually, will wish to start their own small business. This unit is intended to develop knowledge and awareness of entrepreneurship and the importance of small firms, their contribution and importance both to economies in general and to the various Retail sectors in particular.It will also develop an appreciation of the planning and management processes required by entrepreneurs and will encourage you to develop enterprising and entrepreneurial ideas and capabilities.

It will help to understand the contemporary retail environment and examine topical issues, such as the impact of out of town retailing on existing town centers. This unit aims to develop analytical skills related to the UK and the international retail environment.
The dissertation, which is underpinned by a research methods unit, provides you with the opportunity to study a subject in-depth. The resulting piece of work is a 15,000 word dissertation, showing your extensive understanding of the topic. The dissertation is the culmination of your learning experience on the programme, requiring the development of the intellectual capacity to plan and carry out an academically-sound research project, involving the use of an appropriate research methodology to collect and analyse data, a critical treatment of the relevant literature and well-presented findings.
