The aim of this award is to develop your research knowledge and skills to enable you to produce a research proposal which is ethical, feasible and has sufficient rigour to produce meaningful conclusions and recommendations for further study.


Licenciado/Título de Ingeniero/Título de Arquitecto with an average of 6.0-6.9, Aprobado or above

English language qualifications:

GCSE pass in English at Grade C or above
IELTS with an average overall score 6.5 with at least a 5.5 in each component
TOEFL IBT minimum score 88
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE): exams taken from January 2015 – overall score of 176 with at least 162 in each component; exams taken before January 2015 – Grade C and no less than borderline in each skill
Trinity College English Language qualifications: ISE III Pass for postgraduate taught courses and research applications
City and Guild’s IESOL/ISESOL tests at expert and mastery levels (C2 and C1) for the majority of postgraduate programmes
Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum of 67 points in each elemen

Legal and Ethical Aspects of Research

This is a 20 credit module aims to enable you to critically evaluate strategies for implementing programmes of research using legal and ethical principles. You will study introduction to law and ethics; Ethical rules and principles; Ethical theories and models of ethical analysis; The law relating to professional accountability and negligence, ‘duty of care’, and the Bolam test; and a range of professional and legal regulations for conducting research.

PG 4S033 – Quantitative Data analysis

This is a 20 credit level 7 module which aims to provide you with advanced skills in relation to the use of SPSS in the analysis of quantitative data. The module content includes utilising SPSS for the input and analysis of quantitative data, descriptive and inferential statistical analysis; the utilisation of spreadsheets for data input and the use of appropriate software to summarise and present research data.

PG 4S034 -Qualitative data analysis

This is a 20 credit level 7 module which aims to provide you with advanced skills in relation to qualitative data analysis and data presentation using Nvivo data analysis software. The module content includes: Exposure to a range of qualitative analysis techniques so that the student understands the use of a variety of research perspectives; managing qualitative data, field notes, thematic analysis and logs; Computer assisted data analysis (NVivo); assigning codes to data; Interpreting results and data display.

Learning and teaching methods
In order to gain the MSc Professional Practice (Research) degree you will need to study at least 80 credits (including your dissertation) relating to research. This means that you must choose to study at least one of the modules highlighted above.

These modules run yearly depending on demand and are usually delivered weekly, via two to three hour sessions, throughout the academic year. University based sessions include lectures, presentations, facilitated discussions, and hands-on use of computer software.

You will also use our e-learning portal Blackboard and undertake your own background reading to develop a broad knowledge base.

Salidas profesionales

Students from a number of disciplines undertake the research module as this is a core module for a number of awards. This includes nurses; health visitors; midwives; police officers; musicians; geographers; family therapists and school teachers. The modules on the pathway have also been undertaken by students studying for a Clinical research masters and PhD students. This degree will be valuable to any practitioner in any field /discipline and would enable the student to plan and undertake research within their sphere of practice.
