The Master of Music is a professional research degree which prepares students for specialist careers in musicology, ethnomusicology, composition, performance, conducting or music therapy.

Full-time candidature is 18 months and part-time candidature (up to 3 years) is available.

The Master of Music also offers a pathway into the PhD (Music Performance) via conversion to the PhD after one year of enrolment.



Over the period of candidature, students produce a major folio of original works. The folio will be made up of a minimum of two original compositions, in different media, totalling no less than 50 minutes in duration. A CD recording of a performance of at least one work written during the period of candidature is also required. Candidates will receive regular individual lessons and will participate in composition-related activities, including a weekly Composition Seminar and Postgraduate Seminar. Students also have the option to undertake a composition minor and minor thesis.

Music Performance
Instrumental and Vocal candidates present two major public recitals and conducting candidates prepare and conduct an ensemble in two major performances. Performances are normally presented at the 12 and 18 month points of candidature. Candidates will receive regular individual tuition and participate in the weekly Performance Class and Postgraduate Seminar. Further performance opportunities are available through ensemble electives, including chamber music and ensemble activities offered in partnership with the Australian National Academy Music (ANAM). Students can also undertake electives in Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Research Methods and a minor thesis option is also available.

Music Therapy
Candidates undertake a significant research project and prepare a thesis of approximately 30,000 words. Candidates also participate in the regular Postgraduate Seminar, as well as bi- annual intensive research weekends with international scholars who provide additional feedback on projects. Research in Music Therapy is significantly supported and promoted by NaMTRU - National Music Therapy Research Unit.

Ethnomusicology and Musicology
Candidates undertake a research project and prepare a thesis which may be presented as:
A study of approximately 30,000 words embodying the results of significant research
A transcription and edition of a substantial body of music together with a critical study of between 10,000-20,000 words on the music edited.
Candidates also participate in the weekly Postgraduate Seminar.

Minor Thesis option
Candidates also have the option to prepare a Minor Thesis which may be presented as:
A thesis of approximately 15,000 words;
a critical edition and commentary of comparable weighting;
a folio of analyses and commentary of comparable weighting.
Candidates undertaking minor thesis also participate in the weekly Postgraduate Seminar and enrol in a number of Musicology and/or Ethnomusicology coursework electives during their candidature.
