Presentación

Prepare yourself, and improve your chances of promotion, by studying theories of translation and language learning, developing project management and IT skills, learning about the changing uses of English around the world, reflecting on connections with other language professionals, and generating new knowledge through learning how to conduct your own research.

Whether you have experience in translation or are hoping to break into the profession, we will help you to develop your individual interests within the context of your professional practice and encourage you to present your research findings to the applied linguistic community.

Requisitos

In addition to the University’s general entry criteria for postgraduate study, you must have either:

an undergraduate degree (normally a 2.2 or above) of an approved university or
institution;
an equivalent qualification acceptable to York St John University.
Candidates whose main language is English must normally possess evidence of CEFR level C1 in their other language.

If your first language is not English, you will need to take an IELTS test or an equivalent qualification accepted by the University (see http://www.yorksj.ac.uk/international/how-toapply/english-language-requirements.aspx) and achieve:

IELTS 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in the individual components, or an equivalent result in
an English language proficiency test acceptable to York St John University.
If you do not have traditional qualifications, you may be eligible for entry on the basis of ccredited Prior (Experiential) Learning (APL/APEL). We also consider applications for entry with advanced standing.

Programa

Modules
Translation Methodology & Practice - This module explores translation methodology as an academic field, allowing participants to critically reflect on the relevance of theory to practice.
Translation Technology & Practice - We provide participants with training in using computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and an introduction to subtitling, while providing insight into working methods in the translation industry.
Both modules include language-specific translation practice, allowing participants to hone their translating skills while fine-tuning their linguistic ability.

Themes in Applied Linguistics - This introduction to the full scope of applied linguistics explores the diverse and constantly expanding range of issues covered by this discipline.
Research in Applied Linguistics - This module explores the implications of research findings for future professional practice and aims to encourage the participants to exercise an enquiring approach in their future career.
Dissertation - The dissertation is an opportunity to explore a particular aspect of translation in depth.
