Presentación

Coastal and Marine Management is an international, interdisciplinary Masters degree in the field of resource management. The programme emphasises ideas and methods from ecology, sociology, economics and business studies. Students completing the programme have knowledge of the diverse and valuable resources of the coast and the sea, understand their current condition, and have gathered tools and expertise to drive the sustainable use of marine resources.
The course language, including all teaching, is English. The University Centre of the Westfjords offers this programme in co-operation with the University of Akureyri. Teaching takes place in Ísafjörður.

Requisitos

The main condition for acceptance is that applicants have completed a Bachelor´s degree; whether a BA, BSc or BEd. Emphasis is placed on the applicant justifying their reasons and explaining how they hope to link the programme to their previous education and experience.
Applicants must have a good command of English, as all instruction takes place in English. It is assumed that applicants from Iceland, the Scandinavian countries, English-speaking countries, and from universities where all teaching takes place in English will have satisfactory English skills and knowledge. Other applicants must demonstrate that their English ability is sufficient by submitting TOEFL scores or results from other equivalent tests.

Dirigido

The program is cross-disciplinary and prepares students for diverse positions in both the public and private sectors. Among the fields which the master´s program in Coastal and Marine Management prepares students to work in are resource and land use planning, environmental impact assessment, consulting work, teaching and research. The program is internationally oriented and taught in English, and both students and instructors come from a diverse range of countries.

Programa

The master´s program in coastal and marine management is an interdisciplinary program in with an emphasis on northern regions. Students learn various methods for managing marine and coastal areas based on economic, social and environmental principles.

Students complete 8 core courses and up to 12 electives. The core courses are mostly taught at the fall and summer semester of the program. The program emphasizes management and each course involves an interdisciplinary approach. Emphasis is placed on solving real life problems. Solutions to such problems are often based on the principles of sustainable development - e.g. stakeholder participation - and best available technology. The program consists of core subjects such as ecology, physics, chemistry, social science, humanities, law, political science, economics and planning, as well as emphasizing on sustainable development, management skills and tools.
