If you are seeking an intellectual challenge, the MA Humanities gives you the opportunity to build a programme which uniquely reflects and extends your personal interests and skills.
A stimulating combination
The MA Humanities combines both taught and individual research modules so that you can concentrate on your own research pursuits while benefiting from working with other postgraduate students.
In line with contemporary trends in humanities scholarship, we will introduce you to different disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches. These include traditional types of humanities research as well as research which is designed for a more public output, such as engagement with creative writing, performance or exhibitions.
While the taught modules give you a broad introduction to the latest concepts and methodologies, they also enable you to concentrate on your areas of personal intellectual interest from the outset. This focus is carried throughout the course to support your independent study and enable you to produce a substantial piece of research.

You´ll need an Honours degree, 2:2 or above in American Studies, Creative Writing, English, Film and Television Studies, History or Media Studies or in a similar discipline (for example History of Art and Design, Theatre Studies, Modern Languages, Politics or Art and Design with a substantial art and design history component).
If English is not your first language you will need the following English language qualification or equivalent:
You´ll need to choose your target award and identify your potential research area when you apply.

The course is made up of three stages - Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Masters.
Postgraduate Certificate
You will study these modules:
Research Skills in Humanities (20 credits)
This module introduces you to cross-disciplinary research skills. The course reflects the so-called ‘new humanities’ which include a range of disciplines such as American Studies, Creative Writing, English Literature, Film Studies, History and Media Studies.

Research Methodologies in Humanities (40 credits)
You will use research methodologies to undertake individual case studies during this module. This gives you the opportunity to explore a range of research methodologies, historiographies, and theoretical paradigms and to apply these to your chosen topics.
Even though you will focus on particular areas of study, you’ll need to demonstrate an understanding of their position within the broader context of contemporary humanities scholarship.
You’ll also be required to explore more than one set of methodologies, including those related to the moving image, the still image, creative writing, history and English.
Postgraduate Diploma and Masters
You will study this module:
Critical Issues in Humanities (40 credits)
You will be introduced to current theoretical debates in the areas that cut across disciplines within the humanities. In individual sessions, you’ll engage with particular concepts and areas of debate, history, film and popular culture, as well as a range of critical perspectives.

And you will choose between these modules:
Research Project (20 credits)
You will choose an area for intense study and explore it in depth. This will result in the production of a substantial piece of scholarly activity and open up the possibility for you to engage with or produce original research. You can take a single disciplinary or multidisciplinary approach to your work.

Dissertation (60 credits)
After selecting and researching a negotiated humanities field, issue or debate, you will write a dissertation with the help of tutorial support. This may take the form of a traditional piece of academic writing or the production of a piece of relevant creative work.
Extended Dissertation (80 credits)
This module involves producing a more in-depth dissertation on a negotiated theme with tutorial support. The extended dissertation will be based on substantial research and supported by a piece of critical reflection.
For the Dissertation and Extended Dissertation modules, you will be assigned a supervisor who is also your Personal Tutor. They will support you with relevant coursework within the wider masters programme and will keep you up to date with current developments, thinking and debates in the field you have chosen to research.
If you choose the option of studying Critical Issues in Humanities and the Extended Dissertation, you will be able to progress directly from Postgraduate Certificate to Masters level.

Salidas profesionales

The course provides you with skills and knowledge - such as critical thinking, project management and a capacity for independent research - which are highly sought after by employers and relevant to a variety of career paths. Our graduates have gone on to work in industries such as arts or public service administration, publishing, broadcasting, archival services and librarianship.
The University also offers further opportunities for you to develop your transferable skills: our MA Humanities students often become Study Advisors - employed by the library in a paid role to work on a one-to-one basis with other students to share experiences and improve their study skills.
