Part-time - MSc 32 months including dissertation; Part-time - PGDip 24months

Students studying for the MSc HRD will be required to complete the four core units in Year 1. In Year 2 you will take Research Methods plus one core unit and two electives. Each year of the programme features a residential weekend as an integral part of the overall course.

The dissertation (MSc) or management report (PG Dip) gives you the opportunity to link theory with practice within an organisational context. It involves the identification and refinement of an Human Resource Development issue or problem, undertaking an in-depth literature review, the collection of primary data, and the analysis and evaluation of this data so as to produce a set of implementable and/or secondary recommendations.


To apply for a Taught Masters postgraduate course at LSBU you need one of the following:

- IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 580 (Paper) or 237 (Computer) or 90 (Internet)
- Licenciado/Título de Ingeniero/Título de Arquitecto, average 6.0-6.9 (old grading system), or 1.5 in new grading system

For Postgraduate Diploma and Masters courses the normal entry qualification is an Honours degree or equivalent. For some Postgraduate Diplomas alternative qualifications are accepted along with relevant work experience. The University considers each application on its merits and is prepared to admit candidates who can demonstrate they have reached the normal entry requirements on the basis of prior experiential learning.
Applicants for this course must also meet the following additional entry requirements.

You are normally expected to have at least two years post graduate work experience and be currently working in an HRD role (for example, training, learning and development, workplace learning, organisational development, consultancy). We also welcome applicants who are working in an HRM role, but plan to develop their career in an HRD specialism

If you lack the required academic qualifications but meet the work experience requirements above you are also eligible to apply. Applicants will be required to complete a 2,000 word report on an organisational HR issue, provide an extended personal statement and supply two supporting references confirming suitability for entry to a postgraduate programme.

We also consider applications from those who have gained relevant skills through a wide range of vocational qualifications or responsible experience.


The MSc In Human Resource Development (HRD) aims to enhance the professional capability of the HRD practitioner and to add value to the organisations(s) in which they operate. It seeks to develop the personal drive and effectiveness, people management, development and leadership, business understanding, professional and ethical behaviour, continuing learning, analytical and intuitive / creative thinking, ´customer´ focus, strategic thinking and communication, persuasion and interpersonal skills of students to a level where they can make significant professional contribution to the management of HRD in an organisation or sector.

The programme is designed for professionals or line managers who are working in the field of Human Resource Development or Management. Students who have successfully completed the course have found it has enabled them to take on additional responsibilities and/or move onto more senior positions within the HR or Management field.
