This course is for qualified occupational therapists and physiotherapists working in the field of hand therapy.
Building on the competence you’ve already gained in your own professional practice, this course will enable you to continue learning, evaluating, maintaining and developing services for current and future hand therapy provision.
You’ll develop your ability to critically evaluate and reflect on your own practice in hand therapy while reviewing the theory that is fundamental to hand therapy. The course will help you to develop your understanding of research methods and research skills so that you feel empowered to improve your clinical practice. You’ll find that the course is flexible to suit you and fit around your other commitments.
You’ll be fully supported by our knowledgeable academic team, who will help you with your studies by email, phone, online or face to face tutorials. You’ll have the option of attending additional study days on campus to meet with tutors, network with peers and advance your study skills.


You´ll usually need:
an undergraduate degree (at least 2:2) or a diploma in occupational therapy or physiotherapy, or an equivalent qualification;
an English Language GCSE grade C or equivalent;
you´ll also need to currently work in the clinical field of hand therapy.


This course is made up of three stages – Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc. You can also choose to study individual modules as part of your professional development.
Postgraduate Certificate
You’ll study these modules:
Introduction to Masters Level Study
The aim of this module is to help you develop the skills needed to study at masters level, including critical appraisal, so that you can read, understand and critically consider the content of journal articles. This module is delivered by distance learning.
Assessment of the Hand and Upper Limb
During this module, you’ll become familiar with, and investigate, standardised and non-standardised hand and upper limb assessments, as well as techniques for assessing hand injuries and conditions, so that you can make informed decisions regarding assessment and treatment evaluation in your hand therapy. This module is delivered online.
Treatment Modalities
You’ll consider the effectiveness of the treatment methods used in hand therapy and improve your ability to select appropriate treatment modalities within service constraints. This module is delivered online.
Postgraduate Diploma
You’ll study this module:
Research Methods
During this module you’ll develop the skills needed to design, plan, conduct, analyse and report on research relevant to your particular discipline. This module is delivered by distance learning.
You’ll also study one of these hand therapy specific modules:
Hand Injuries and Conditions: Mechanisms and Interventions
You’ll critically review the theoretical underpinnings of treatment protocols and analyse evidence for the effectiveness of existing practice. This module can be studied as a single or double module. It is delivered online with some distributed learning.
Hand Therapy in Practice
We have developed this practical module in collaboration with the British Association of Hand Therapists. This is an opportunity to critically appraise your assessment and treatment skills and apply them in a practical manner to your caseload. This module is delivered by combination of face to face and online.
You´ll also choose one other module. It can be another hand therapy specific module from the list above or one of the following optional modules:

Management of Change
This module is delivered by distance learning.
Negotiated Module
This module is delivered by distance learning and is a work-based learning module enabling you to design your own learning specific to your workplace.
Professional and Informed Reasoning
This module is delivered by distance learning.
Physical Characteristics and Ergonomics
This module is delivered by distance learning.
Radiographic Image Analysis of the Appendicular Skeleton
This module is delivered face to face.

You’ll study this module:
Independent Scholarship
During this triple module you’ll have the opportunity to investigate in detail a chosen area of practice relevant to your hand therapy practice. This module is delivered by distance learning.

Salidas profesionales

To remain registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, it´s now essential that all health professionals can show they´re committed to life-long learning and continued professional development. Taking this course is a great way of showing this. To get a post in the NHS as a Clinical Specialist, Extended Scope Practitioner or Consultant Therapist, you´ll usually need to have, or be working towards, a Masters degree. So this course should help you develop your career.
After completing the PG Diploma or Masters stage of the course you could apply for a place on the Doctor of Health and Social Care Practice which will enable you to develop as a clinical and professional leader in your workplace.
