The MA in Education: Learning and Teaching offers practising teachers a wealth of opportunities to learn both from peers and expert practitioners in a supportive but academically rigorous environment. You will engage with recent academic research and develop the critical, analytical and reflective skills essential to any teacher, whilst exploring contemporary Government policy, curriculum and classroom-based issues. Our tutors are all established scholars and/or practitioners in their fields and offer their expertise at both whole group and individual levels, with tutorial support built into every module.

Most options have an average of eight face-to-face taught sessions during the year, some including twilight and Saturday sessions. All options have a minimum of two and maximum of four assessments during the year, some including a presentation.

You will choose one option in Year 1 and a further option in Year 2. In Year 3, you will take the Professional Enquiry which is a core module taken by all students to complete the MA.

The information included on this webpage is indicative of the courses provided by the University of Leicester. A 2:2 degree or above, or equivalent.

Qualified teacher status or suitable experience in an educational setting.

Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning (APCL): If you completed your PGCE within the last five years with 60 M-level credits, you can reduce your study time to two years by using your credits as Year 1 of the MA (accredited prior learning). In this case, you will automatically start in Year 2 with an option of your choice.

You can also reduce your study time if you have completed a relevant, M-level, standalone, accredited module or PGCert with us, or another university. You will need to apply for approval of your APCL.

Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL): If you have significant relevant experience you may be eligible to apply for 30 or 60 credits towards your MA. You can apply for APEL if you can demonstrate (by undertaking some written tasks) that your professional experience allows exemption from 30 or 60 credits of these two options:

Effective Pedagogy and Assessment
Developing Leadership in Education

Further information regarding APCL and APEL will be provided when you apply for the MA.

English Language Requirements: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent. If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. If you do not yet meet our requirements, our English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) offers a range of courses to help you to improve your English to the necessary standard.

Taught options:

Over the course of Years 1 and 2 you will take one or two taught options, depending upon the level of your previous studies. If you have 60 M-level credits from your PGCE (or similar level 7 credits) you will only need to select one taught option from our list and then in your second year you will complete a Professional Enquiry research project (Dissertation) in your own school. If you don’t have those initial 60 credits then you will choose a second taught option.

There are both subject specific strands and more specialised routes such as the nationally recognised SEBDA and Dyslexia courses for which you also gain professional accreditation.
