The course runs over two academic years and is made up of seven core modules (20 credits each), our Arts Therapies Independent Scholarship module is deemed a triple module (60 credits).
You’ll study these modules:
Art Therapy Clinical Placement One
You’ll work in supervised clinical settings, to develop and apply approaches and prepare for your role as an art therapist. While you’re completing your clinical placements, you will be supervised by an appropriate professional and also attend a reflective practice group, which will be led by an art therapist. Due to placement requirements, you’ll need to undertake a health screening at the start of the course to establish your fitness to practice.
Arts Therapies Theory and Research in Relation to Practice One
You’ll develop your knowledge of human development, health and disability from social, psychological and physiological perspectives. You’ll consider the pathology and psychopathology of the contemporary diagnostic groups used in clinical environments. You’ll also look at a wide range of factors that influence diagnosis, including cultural contexts.
Art Therapy Studio
This module will give you experience of art making in a studio setting, while exploring and examining your own creative development and artistic identify. You’ll also gain a richer, fuller and ultimately enhanced understanding of visual language in all its forms and expressions. The studio is facilitated by an art therapist.
Art Therapy Clinical Placement Two
You’ll work in supervised clinical settings, to develop and deepen your knowledge and skills in the application of therapeutic approaches learned, and prepare for your role as an art therapist. While you’re completing your clinical placements, you will be supervised by an appropriate professional and also attend a reflective practice group, which will be led by an art therapist.
Arts Therapies Theory and Research in Relation to Practice Two
During this module you’ll develop your understanding of a range of research methodologies and have the opportunity to evaluate and theorise your clinical practice. You’ll develop the skills you need to decide the type of evidence that is appropriate for a given area.
Art Therapy Experiential Group
In order to be an effective and sensitive art therapist, you need more than just an intellectual understanding. During this module, you’ll take part in group work, which will allow you to develop empathy for clients. This will also enable you to gain an understanding of group processes and in addition, get valuable feedback on your performance. The group is facilitated by an art therapist and runs throughout the first year of the training, until February in the second year.
Arts Therapies Independent Scholarship: A Body of Work
During this triple module, you’ll conduct an art based piece of heuristic research. To support you during this process, you are allocated two supervisors.
