By taking our Applied Criminology MSc, you can combine the theoretical analysis of criminology with a practical placement. Campus-based modules will cover the key issues in contemporary criminology. Your placement will allow you to apply your knowledge - and gain valuable experience and insight - in a supervised practical setting of your choosing within the criminal justice sector.
You will gain a thorough understanding of the criminal justice system and develop your critical awareness of historical debates, theories and research in criminology. You will also examine the current political, economic and social context of relevant debates on crime in the UK and abroad.
The course has been prepared by lecturers who are at the forefront of research in this field. Our selection of option modules allows you to specialise in areas of interest that relate to your professional needs including Crime, Justice and Psychology, Penology, Understanding Terrorism, Transnational Policing and the Psychology of Evil.
You will learn how to critically appraise research into criminology as well as conduct and write up your own study on a topic of your choice. You will develop transferable skills that are highly valued by employers including the ability to present and develop a coherent argument, advanced communication, research and problem-solving skills. The placement module will enhance your employment prospects within the criminal justice professions.
