This programme is a unique development in the field of golf coaching in seeks to develop you into a high quality coach through learning in a research led environment.
This programme is open only to students who are recognised golf professionals by a Professional Golfers’ Association which itself is recognised by the PGA World Alliance.
All students will be required to be qualified coaches with an award recognised by their national governing body, normally at Level 2 of the UKCC or its equivalent. Students will also be expected to regularly coach an average of 3 hours per week whilst on the programme.
(i) Attainment of a good Honours degree (normally a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree) awarded by an approved University in an appropriate subject, or the equivalent thereof
(ii) Attainment of an alternative qualification or qualifications and/or evidence of experience judged by the School as indicating a student’s potential for study and as satisfactory for the purpose of entry to a taught degree programme. This may include the requirement to produce a written piece of work and attendance at interview.
(iii) Attainment of the FdA Professional Golf awarded by the University
Research Methods and Skills in Sport Coaching
The module will examine different research traditions and provide students with an opportunity to critique existing empirical material. Students will explore key theoretical issues such as interview techniques; designing of quantitative questionnaires; data analysis (both quantitative and qualitative) and the development and completion of ethics forms. Students will also examine the process of data collection; management; interpretation; analysis and presentation through the use of case studies.
Advanced Coaching Theory
In this module students will examine the principles of the reflective practice in coaching and how reflection can take on different forms. Students will be required to reflect upon their own coaching practice and this process will be used to critique the role of pedagogy in coaching practice. The module will introduce students to the holistic nature of coaching. Students will also explore the notion of expertise in coaching and how expertise in developed in both coaching and other domains.
This module introduces students to the concept of player and participant development from a multi-disciplinary standpoint (a bio-psycho-social approach). It analyses and evaluates the role of sports science within coaching and will critique existing models of player development. Students will be expected to critique the current theory and consider their own personal practice in this regard.
Students will engage with the multi-disciplinary nature of coaching and performance and will use player to data to produce an applied development strategy using case studies designed to develop an understanding of the difficulties involved in player development.
