The Professional Certificate in Management is an internationally recognized professional qualification for managers. In addition it is a foundation for further study at postgraduate level, leading on to the Professional Diploma in Management, which in turn comprises Stage 1 of the OU Business School MBA. With its foundation management models and techniques, this course will help you to increase your knowledge, competence and confidence as a new, general or middle manager. You will look at your role and how to develop it within an organisational context, learning to recognise your strengths and overcome your weaknesses. You’ll learn how to work more effectively with colleagues and staff, covering issues of recruitment, motivation, teamwork and leadership, and how to interpret and use financial and other information. Finally, you will explore marketing and quality management concepts to help you to add value for your customers – understanding and satisfying their needs and communicating with them.

Programa:
This course constitutes the University’s Professional Certificate in Management, the foundation for further study at diploma and masters levels. It will help you to perform more effectively as a manager, both as an individual and as a team member, by: • increasing your basic management knowledge and competence; • providing a repertoire of theories, concepts and techniques to apply in different management settings; • helping you to understand your own role, its context and your relationship with your organisation; • encouraging you to be a reflective practitioner, applying independent and inquisitive learning in the workplace; • helping you to recognise your strengths and overcome your weaknesses as a manager; • giving you a better understanding of the vocabulary of specialist and senior managers, so that you can hold more informed, confident conversations with colleagues, work more effectively with them and challenge them if appropriate. Four key management areas are examined in the four blocks. The first, Managing, covers your role as manager, how you develop your managerial effectiveness and the organisational context; so that you will manage with greater confidence, awareness and effect. Managing people then helps you to work more effectively with colleagues and staff; its topics include motivation, recruitment, team working and leadership. Managing finance and information enables you, as a general manager, to find, interpret and use information especially quantitative financial information. It covers costs, how they are calculated, categorised and managed as well as budget management. Finally, Managing customers and quality uses marketing and quality management concepts to help you to add value for your customers and other stakeholders. You look at how your customers behave; the importance of researching, understanding and satisfying their needs; and communicating with them.
