Presentación

The course emphasis is on building on your knowledge of linguistics to underpin practical training in translation, and enhancing your skills through option modules. Teaching involves both class contact through lectures, workshops, seminars, group and project work, and independent study including research and interpreting assignments. Assessment methods range from interpreting assignments to essays, presentations and projects.

Requisitos

You should have a first degree in modern languages or a related subject. Mature linguists without a degree, but with sufficient working experience in translation, are invited to apply. We will interview you in person or on the telephone and set you a translation test to check your language competence. The course is only suitable for those whose first language is English.

Objetivos

This course is for native speakers of English only. It provides you with highly professional training for the translation market, and the opportunity to build on your existing language skills and to develop your knowledge of linguistics. You will learn to translate from one main language (French, German, Italian, Russian or Spanish) into English, and you will study two linguistics modules. You will complete either the MA Thesis (research on a translation or interpreting topic) or the MA Translation Project (an extended translation with a preface and annotations), and you will also be able to choose from a range of option modules.

You will be able to benefit from our wide range of resources, including an extensive collection of volumes and electronic materials in our library, and additional resources made available through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. Our teaching staff includes full- and part-time lecturers, all with expertise in translation or linguistics and other specialist fields. You will be allocated a personal tutor and be given academic guidance by the course team.
